Kailash Mansarovar Yatra - Saptarishi Caves

Kailash Mansarovar Yatra - Saptarishi Caves

Saptarishi: seven scholars from ancient India who were bestowed with supernatural powers and a plethora of accomplishments. They were equipped with skills, and each Saptarishi is an illustration of a Tatva (basic elements like fire, spirit, water, nature, stone, air, and sky). Saptarishi Caves, located beneath Mount Kailash, can be accessed through a tough and challenging trek – here you have to climb a wall, i.e., in a straight and almost 90-degree vertical position.

The location consists of 13 chortens. In this area, the Saptarishi Caves are presumed to be the residence of the seven rishis who were the true admirers of Lord Shiva. The Saptarishi Caves are also accompanied by Nandi Parvat and Aatma Lingam, etc. This makes it the inner Parikrama; the trek of the inner Kora is extremely difficult.

This Outer and Inner Kora is performed during the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra, where devotees immerse themselves in the hidden beauty and true dedication to Lord Shiva and his sanctum. This is an immensely divine journey to witness the magnetic energy of Mount Kailash. What makes it unique is its mysterious layout and shape, along with its spiritual associations. People who are interested in visiting Mount Kailash without restrictions include Buddhists, Hindus, Bonpos, and Jains. Mount Kailash is given equal importance by all these religions; thus, it is not solely a place for a single religion but for many of them. However, there are many stories linked with this tall peak, and the devotional inclination varies from religion to religion. There are many points of interest in this area, one of which is the Saptarishi Caves.

Journey to the Saptarishi Caves

The Saptarishi Caves are situated at a high altitude of 6,000 metres and are known as one of the toughest treks of the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra. Apart from Atmalingam, we can see the vertical wall that can be climbed to see the Saptarishi Cave . These caves consist of 13 Chortens, which are managed by the Gengta Monastery located in the Inner Parikrama area.

Also, there is the existence of a long horizontal crack in the cave that is present mainly to protect the region so that neither the snowfall nor the rocks nor the snow falls and to protect from external damage. The cave exterior is red in colour, as it is maintained and followed by the Tibetan tradition, and also, this unique location mesmerizes the visitors, and they pray to Lord Shiva by offering books in devotion and thank him for his blessings and eternal peace bestowed on them.

Devotees visiting the location of Saptrishi can see many religious books, which can be read or just viewed. From here, the plan heads towards Nandi Mountain, resembling the Nandi, i.e., the bull-shaped mountain identified as the sacred vehicle of Lord Shiva and a messenger to transfer the wishes of devotees to the Lord, deeply engrossed in meditation.

On the route of Inner Kora, the Saptarishi Caves trek is considered to be the most difficult trek and can be experienced by the mountaineers or agile devotees who have stamina and strength to visit the location. The Saptarishi caves are located 11.5 km from Darchan (base of the Kailash trek), and those intending to visit the Saptarishi caves usually stay at Darchan these days for the Inner Kora.
