Mt. Kailash is considered the most sacred destination in Tibet; there is a steady flow of Hindus as well as Buddhists to this holy place every year. It is not permitted to climb Mt. Kailash, but one can undertake a 52km total with 38 km trek circumambulation around the mountain.

This is a journey by a chartered helicopter. Fly from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj and then to Simikot. Day 03 : Fly Simikot- Hilsa. Drive to Purang 3,770m

Early morning flight to Simikot and a helicopter flight to Hilsa. Then cross the Karnali bridge over to Tibet. Drive to Purang (Taklakot). Immigration formalities at the border custom office before Purang.

Day 04 : Purang, acclimatization day 3,770m

A day to relax and acclimatize to the high altitude. It is important to stay hydrated (3/4 litres a day) and be extremely aware of one’s physical condition, which the staff will also monitor at all times. The group have the option of hiking which would definitely help pilgrims/trekkers get used to trek conditions for Kailash Parikrama.

Day 05 : Purang to Lake Mansarovar 4,582m. (FULL MOON DAY) 14

A beautiful drive through the dramatic valleys, the rivers and through the grazing lands of yaks and sheep. The landscape is filled with snowcapped peaks rising out of the distant sand dunes. Many Tibetan nomads and traders in their traditional dress inhibit this area. By late afternoon, the drive through the green pastures and massive valleys gives way to the first sighting of Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar from Chhesakhang. Walk through the small village of Sherlung and Thugu Gompa on the banks of the holy lake or drive all the way to the western bank for an overnight stay at Chui Gompa (monastery).

One can visit the lake and enjoy the spectacular views of Mt. Gurula Mandhata 7,728m to the south and Kailash to the north.

Day 06 : Lake Mansarovar to Darchen 4,670m. Parikrama / Kora Mt. Kailash, Dirapuk 4,900m

The staff will set up individual bath tents on the banks of Lake Mansarovar for the pilgrims before circumambulating Mount Kailash. A ritual bath at Mansarovar is considered to attain moksha and a drink of its water relinquishes the sins. After lunch, drive north towards Darchen, a village considered the base camp for Kailash. If pre-arranged, one can visit Rakshasi Lake, Asthaparbat, Nandi Parbat and Tirthapuri.

Drive to Sershong. First day of walking around Kailash begins at Tarbuche. Along the way, one passes numerous chortens (stupas), Chukku monastery, the burial site of the 84 mahasiddhas and wonderful views of cascading creeks, streaming waterfalls and the mighty west face of Kailash. After five hours one arrives at the Dirapuk monastery. The north face of Kailash is seen from a distance. Stay overnight.

Day 07 : Parikrama / Kora Mt. Kailash, Zuthulpuk 4,760m

Long and challenging day of the parikrama. Cross Dolma-La pass 5,636m between two valleys, Yamastal and reach Shiva-sthal, where to symbolize death, pilgrims leave the old clothes, hair or drop of blood in hope that Yamarajan (God of death) will aceept these and allow the pilgrims to be born in spirit to pass Dolma-La. In Buddhism, the pass symbolizes with the goddess Container and in Hinduism to Parvati, wife of Shiva. On reaching the top, Shiva-stal, the offerings are placed and one can meditate. On the way down, one crosses Parvati-stal, Gauri Kunda and reaches Zuthulpuk (the cave of miracles, the great ascetic Milerappa is supposed to have performed miracles here) along the river. All along the way, there are wonderful views of high peaks, streams, waterfalls and mountain cave

Tibetan terrain is dry, cold, windy and dusty and night is much colder than the day. The best months for a Mt. Kailash trip are from May to September. During this period, the  maximum temperature will be 22oC and minimum temperature will drop to -10oC.

Anyone who can walk for an average of 4-5 hours a day can make this trip. The itinerary is programmed to help get the clients acclimatisation to the gradual rise in altitude. All participants are advised to check their fitness before joining the trip.

Altitude sickness may be felt above 3000m, but with the acclimatisation day and the gradual rise in altitude, you shouldn’t feel too much at discomfort. It’s always advisable to stay hydrated and drink lots of water.

Transportation in Tibet will be by Land Cruiser or Tourist Coach. A support truck will be travelling along to carry all the camping gear, food provisions and luggage.

Four star hotel accommodation will be provided in Kathmandu. In Tibet, accommodation will be in lodges for every stay overnight, whereas during the Kailash Parikarma and at Mansarovar, there will  be tents with foam mattresses and sleeping bags.

Sometimes the lodges in Tibet may not be sufficient to provide individual rooms, so you may have to share with fellow participants.

While on the trip, all main meals, tea, coffee, juice and drinking chocolate are included. Food is prepared by our trained cook and is served hot – however while travelling, a packed lunch will be  provided until the next stopover. Proper boiled water/mineral water will be provided.

There will be restricted means of communication during the trip, but the team leader will have a roaming phone to convey messages in an emergency which you can also use to call your home. Also telephone lines are available at various points of the journey.

Each participant must be covered by travel and medical insurance that should include helicopter evacuation in an emergency. Please hand us a copy of your insurance.

Bottled oxygen with mask and regulator for all emergency/medical purposes will be carried during the   tour and the parikarma.
Prior to departure from Kathmandu each participant must leave a bond with Climb High in the form of an authorization letter. This enables Climb High, in the event of an emergency, to initiate emergency services and any other services necessary without delay.

In Tibet, only Chinese currency ‘Yuan’ is accepted. So it is advisable to exchange the currency you need before your departure for Tibet. You can exchange INR/ USD to Yuan in any money exchange in Kathmandu or at border. There are no ATM facilities available anywhere during the tour.

Tour Leader/Cook/Helpers

Each group will have a tour leader/guide accompanied by an experienced cook and the required number of helpers as per the group size. They are courteous and are fully committed in providing the best of their services. The tour guides are highly experienced with years of Kailash trips behind them.  Similarly the cooks too are experienced and well trained to prepare all dishes.
