Bajrayogini Temple

Bajrayogini temple is also famous with the name of Bodhisattva temple and one of the famous tantric temples of Nepal. This temple is situated in Sankhu and the temple has powers of blessings. Bajrayogini temple is one of the most religious temples of Nepal. During the periods of Pratap Malla this temple was renovated. In the library of Denmark there is a book which is in Newari script that describes the sequence of development of Bajrayogini temple. Since Kirat regime this temple is famous and also named as Gun Bihar. In Newari language Gun means forest and Bihar means the recreational place. nowadays Bajrayogini is famous with the name of Gunbaha.

Bajrayogini is the goddess with red face, three eyes along with middle finger and thumb on both hands and the goddess is decorated in Bajrayan tantra. The sword of the goddess is also decorated using different amethysts and ornaments. The Bajrayogini temple consist of three floors and other temple is famous with the name of Dharmaghatu chaitya is situated near to this temple. It is said that this temple is older than Swoyambhu Chaitya.

From the Stone Age nine caves are located near to this area. One of the caves has two room in which priest goes inside for Penance it is said that only those priests can go who is the ardent lover of goddess. During chaite Poornima the Bajrayogini fair takes place which is also known as full moon day which comes between month of March and April. In the holy book an interesting story about goddess Bajrayogini is written. As per the story where now the temple located in the beginning of Bhadrakalpo’s age and ice age five colored flame came out from the fork of stone and after long time goddess Bajrayogini emerged. It is believed that Gyanacharya yogi was the first priest through whom penance in the cave was performed for the first time. After him the penance was performed by Shidikul Mahabihar through whom the super knowledge which is also called Bajracharya Diksha was given. Shidikul Mahabihar was then called with the name of Bachashidi Bajracharya. It is said that the present Bajrayogini is the descendant of Bachashidi Bajracharya.

The conch shaped town named Shankharapur was established with the order given by the goddess to Jog Dev Bajracharya. The fair which is conducted in this village is also named after his village “Sankhu”. The Nepal government try to bring the legendary, cultural and historical importance in world’s Heritage List. There is a committee named The Shree Bajrayogini Service Committee who is taking care of this area with the assistance of Department of Archaeology which is under Nepal government. There are many trust institutions and public sector institutions also support this committee for taking care of the area.

The Bagmati Integrated watershed management project and district oil conservation office of Kathmandu are doing some efforts to conserve this area with the help of Landslides and Gullies. Every year the watershed management and Department of Soil conversation on 24th Shrawan organized the Soil conservation day. Also for 29th style conservation day this area was selected.
